24th July
i'm a bit late, but yesterday was a day of exceptional circumstance... three releases on the one day that spun my world a little faster.
First off, there's the debut EP from UH HUH HER, 'I See Red'. UHH is the new band from Leisha Hailey, formerly of the Murmurs and Gush, and Camila Grey of the band Mellowdrone. The EP is pretty cool, I have different favorites on any given day, but i'd recommend 'say so' and 'explode' (my current favorite). I think Uh Huh Her is a band to follow, they'll no doubt already have a loyal fan base through Hailey's role on The L Word, but I think the music speaks for itself, Uh Huh Her are a band to throw yourself into, so go to it. Check out their myspace were 'I See Red' is currently streaming, or buy the EP on iTunes and get an exclusive track.
UHH
Secondly is Tegan and Sara's new album 'The Con'. It took me a while to get into Tegan and Sara, I initially only liked a grand total of two of their songs around the time so jealous was released, a year later a friend gave me copies of 'If It Was You' and 'So Jealous', and now i'm not sure what i was thinking of at the start. But I digress... 'The Con' is rocking, and I could end up recommending half the record... but I wont, check out the title track 'the con', 'nineteen' and 'back in your head' here . 'Back in Your Head' also seems to be the song they've gone with as the first single, check that out below.
and finally.... the Yeah Yeah Yeahs released their EP 'ISIS'. If anybody bought the 'Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow' DVD, the EP has a couple of songs from that which didn't make 'Show Your Bones' which is craziness because 'Down Boy' easily tops anything that went onto the album. Worth picking up just for that. Also have a look at the video, filmed live and in night vision by Lance Bangs.

WHERE ARE YOUR FRIENDS TONIGHT...
there comes a time, maybe once or twice a year, when i run out of music. it's a hard time; frustrating and fruitless, sometimes i fear it will never pass... but it does. Hurrah!!
god bless LCD soundsystem, god bless them all. if you haven't heard sounds of silver yet, you really should, even if it's just for 'all my friends' (above) and 'someone great'. and while you're at it, also check out 'Yr city's a sucker' on the DFA records website, just click on radio, and flick forward, or just click radio and listen to them all. once more, Hurrah!

80's SYNTH POP TANGENT
Along with all this talk of great Australian bands (save for the break in proceedings to bow down to the greatness that is the new young pony club) you can't really go on without talking about the large slice of 80s synth pop that is cut copy. They have some very cool stuff, and for some reason their song 'Saturdays' (above) makes me want to do a highly choreographed, yet seemingly spare of the moment dance routine in the middle of the street whilst joined by a small group of complete strangers who oddly know it too, and that's not something i'm prone to.
For more on them have a look at their website and also check out their myspace for a listen to 'hearts on fire', the first song off their, as yet untitled, second album.
and in honour of this 80's synth pop tangent i've found myself on, here's some others...

I (heart) NYPC
The New Young Pony Club seem to have taken off in the last couple of months. Their song 'ice cream', recent sold old gig in London and current slot on the NME indie rave tour with the klaxons, css, and the sunshine underground means that anyone looking for tickets for their forthcoming UK tour best be quick (they're also rumoured to be supporting gossip on their US tour). I saw them recently on the indie rave tour, the only good thing about it being an all ages event was that even though there were several rows of big haired, red bull drinking 16 year olds between me and the stage, my several inch height difference allowed me to enjoy the most unobstructed view i've ever experienced, although the 7 o'clock start time meant that i missed the start of get lucky. The moral of this story; if you have the chance to see the new young pony club you should go and see them, and if you have tickets for the NME tour, go early.
for more check out their website, also look out for their remix of gossip's jealous girls.

WE WILL BREAK OUR NECKS BEFORE YOUR HEARTS
"Teenager is kinda like the name itself. Young and horny. Unpredictable. Loud. Drunk. Abusive in a loving kinda way."
This is the second of the cool bands from Australia posts, though I think teenager is probably one of my favourites at the minute, i'd been looking for the song liquid cement for ages, and finally decided to get their new album shipped over from Austalia, twas well worth it. teenager is Pip Brown (Ladyhawke), Nick Littlemore (pnau), Oscar Wuts and Dean Cameron. Their debut album Thirteen released through Timberyard is out in the uk sometime this March and includes songwriting collaborations with Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo amongst others. Stand out tracks are alone again, pony, west, the good fight, and liquid cement (also look out for the VanShe Remix of alone again)
for your listening pleasure

GOXXIP better than people tell you they are
it's jumping on an over crowded bandwagon to say that gossip are a good band, that their blend of punk and disco is the next big thing or even that Beth Ditto in her fat, lesbian, swimsuit clad glory is cool, but i still feel the urge to squish myself in there. it may also be a slight understatement to say that gossip are just good, but i'm not sure that it's the words that are important rather than the way those words are said. Maybe they'd be better proclaimed, preached even from great heights, from the tops of buildings with arms open wide and eyes screwed tight or maybe even just from atop slightly shaky office furniture to a room full of unsuspecting co-workers, it doesn't matter that you're now preaching to the newly converted, it's just something that just has to be done.
